A New Era in Christianity; Diocese Names First LGBT+ Chaplain in Historic Appointment

In a historic move, the Diocese of Newcastle has appointed Rev Emma Duff as its first chaplain dedicated to LGBT+ matters. The position, reported by Premier Christian News, is intended to create a “safe space” within the church for individuals to explore and discuss issues related to sexuality.

Rev Emma Duff: A New Leader for LGBT+ Inclusion

Ordained in 2014, Rev Duff brings a unique background as a former lawyer to her new position. She expressed excitement about the opportunity to lead as the LGBTQI+ chaplain, with plans to recruit a supportive team aimed at making diocesan life more inclusive for LGBT+ people.

“I’m delighted to have been appointed as lead LGBTQI+ chaplain and am looking forward to recruiting a team to provide welcome, support and safe spaces,” she shared with the Hexham Courant. Highlighting the challenges faced by LGBT+ people, she referenced recent Stonewall research indicating that less than half of LGBT+ individuals feel safe holding their partner’s hand in public.

The Diocese of Newcastle has previously demonstrated its support for LGBT+ matters. In 2018, as part of Newcastle pride week, it hosted the “Queering the Church” panel featuring Rev Bingo Allison, who identifies as nonbinary, genderqueer, and transgender.

A Step Towards Greater Inclusion

Earlier this year, Bishop Dr. Helen-Anne Hartley of Newcastle, who was part of the Church of England’s Living in Love and Faith program, reaffirmed her dedication to LGBT+ inclusion while recognizing the diversity of views within her diocese. She shared, “Mindful of different views within my own diocese, I am fully committed to the full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people.”

Commenting on Rev Duff’s appointment, Dr. Hartley described the chaplaincy role as a “visible demonstration” of the Diocese’s efforts to support and celebrate individuals who have often been sidelined by church debates.
