The new facility will be opened to the public on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the Rossoneri. ‘It will be an area that will live all year round,’ declared President Scaroni.
Milan fans are already rubbing their hands in anticipation. They envision themselves with a glass of champagne in hand, celebrating the club’s 130th birthday in the new home, perhaps after a restaurant lunch overlooking the stadium. All of this in San Donato, San Francesco area, before a big match.
THE PROJECT
The Rossoneri dream could come true in 2028, with the inauguration of the new facility. The club has officially purchased the land where it plans to build the future home. These are funds specifically allocated by RedBird for the project. A decisive step towards an idea that involves building a 70k-seat stadium with all the comforts: two levels of parking for over three thousand cars, a hotel, restaurant area, offices, a Milan store, a museum, a square, and even an auditorium. Scaroni has hypothesized the inauguration for the 2028-29 season, to be ready to celebrate the club’s 130th anniversary in the new stadium.
ISSUES
Francesco Squeri, mayor of San Donato, spoke about it in detail at the end of January during the project presentation press conference. The project will be carried out by the Manica studio, which has already worked on several facilities in the United States, including the Inter Miami FC Stadium and the NRG Stadium in Houston. To build in San Donato, the existing transportation system must be strengthened, a new railway station developed, reduce car usage, and finally, reclaim some areas designated for parking. The real challenge, as stated by Squeri, will be “the new San Donato railway station. We need new tracks, widening of platforms. It must become a real station. The aim is to promote rail transport to reduce road traffic.” said the mayor.
LOCATION
The choice of the area is strategic, nestled between the beginning of the Eastern ring road and the A1 motorway junction. The stadium would be the first major structure to appear for those arriving in Milan from the south. In front of the land, there is also the railway station, while the subway is a mile and a half away (yellow line, San Donato). It will be an area that “will live all year round,” as specified by Scaroni: “In addition to matches, there will also be other events, like concerts.” Cardinale, finally, entered the Milan world by kicking the door and showcasing his ideas to everyone. Building a new facility was his goal from day one. “I want to give fans the next European football landmark,” he recently declared. “It’s crucial, especially for the fans. If we succeed, it will have a big impact on Italy.” Especially for those arriving by car.
