Francesco Squeri, Mayor of San Donato has outlined the AC Milan facility: “Here, there will be the new stadium, museum, offices, a hotel, and a restaurant, as well as the club’s official store and an auditorium.”
A process that is expected to last for at least 18 months, and potentially, in 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony may take place. This is the bureaucratic journey outlined for the new stadium that AC Milan hopes to build in San Donato. The key step is obtaining the program agreement, and its outcome (for now) remains uncertain, considering the complexities involving various entities: the Region, State Railways, Parco Sud, not to mention the City of Milan and the Metropolitan City, both under the leadership of Mayor Sala, who is attempting to retain both clubs at San Siro.
The area initially had approval for a 20,000-seat arena, but now it has to transform into a 70,000-seat stadium. The proposed program variation has been submitted and deemed acceptable by the San Donato Municipality, but it needs further discussion and agreement on many environmental and infrastructural aspects that still pose challenges.
SAN DONATO’S MAYOR DECLARATIONS
San Donato Mayor Francesco Squeri stated, “The challenge lies in the mobility and how to reach our area. Currently, the station is just a stop, not a proper station; it needs to become a real railway station. Our building power currently allows a flow of about 8,000 people per hour, but the goal is to increase it to 20-25,000 people per hour. This includes increasing train frequencies, constructing parking lots, improving connections with the metro, and enhancing accessibility for new highway exits. It’s another obstacle-filled journey, but the goal, as optimistically envisioned by AC Milan, is for the stadium to open up in 2028 to kick-start the 28/29 season.
