CR7, in an interview with Record, questions the award which he has won multiple times: ‘I’m not saying Messi didn’t deserve it, but one must consider the entire season.’
Having won the prestigious award five times in his career, no one expected these statements. Or perhaps, as the gossip suggests, behind Cristiano Ronaldo‘s criticism of the Ballon d’Or lies regret for not being considered in the last edition of the award.
The Portuguese forward, currently at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, made a direct attack in an interview with the Portuguese ‘Record‘: ‘The Ballon d’Or has lost credibility, it’s not that important anymore. I’m not saying Messi didn’t deserve it, or Haaland, and not even Mbappรฉโฆ but the numbers are there, and numbers don’t lie. One must consider the entire season. The numbers are facts and those are not being respected.’
This statement aligns perfectly with Ronaldo’s remarks from the previous day in Dubai, where he explained to journalists how satisfied he was to have scored more goals than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland in 2023.
‘If you go back and look at what happened at Manchester United and in the national team, people really considered me finished. But the truth is, I focused and had a great period at Al-Nassr, that’s why I scored 54 goals.’
‘I’m not surprised at my level because I know I still have a lot to offer. I know I can provide many goals for Al-Nassr and the national team, so it was incredible personally to score 54 goals.’ However, Ronaldo then clarifies: ‘I don’t think much about winning another one.'”
