The ‘captain’ aiming for history. Arriving from Racing Avellaneda in the summer of 2018, Lautaro Martinez is becoming Inter’s new symbol. Thanks to the five goals scored in the first three league matches, the Argentine now has a total of 107 goals in Nerazzurri colors: it all began with a header against Cagliari on a September evening five years ago.
9. Christian Vieri (123)
Very possible for Lautaro to surpass Christian Vieri this season. Bobo has scored 123 goals wearing the Inter jersey, achieved in six seasons from 1999 to 2005. Vieri’s goal-scoring average in Nerazzurri colors is extraordinary: 0.65 goals per game.
8. Mauro Icardi (124)
At 124 goals, there’s Mauro Icardi: El Toro is 17 goals behind his compatriot and former strike partner. In his first season in Milan, Lautaro was essentially the backup for the then-captain. He found his opportunity after the rupture between Mauro and the Nerazzurri world, before exploding alongside Conte in the LuLa partnership. Like Vieri, Icardi also played for six seasons at Inter, from 2013 to 2019, with an average of 0.57 goals per match.
7. Istvan Nyers (133)
To surpass Istvan Nyers already in this season, Lautaro would need to score another 26 goals. The French striker, who became a Hungarian citizen, has a total of 133 goals for Inter, scored between 1948 and 1954, before moving to Roma for two years. With the Nerazzurri, he won two consecutive Serie A titles in the 1952-53 and 1953-54 seasons, with Alberto Foni as the coach. His goal-scoring average is an astonishing 0.73 goals per match.
6. Benito Lorenzi (143)
For over a decade in the Nerazzurri, from 1947 to 1958, there was a player called Benito Lorenzi, who was a teammate of Nyers during the two mentioned Serie A titles. He scored a total of 143 goals while wearing the Inter jersey, with a goal-scoring average of 0.46 goals per match, essentially one goal every two matches.
5. Luigi Cevenini (158)
In fifth place, there’s a player who belonged to the very early Inter, during the 1910s and 1920s of the last century. Luigi Cevenini was born in Milan in 1885 and wore the jerseys of Milan, Inter, and Juventus. He played for Inter on three separate occasions, during the period from 1912 to 1927. He scored 158 goals in Nerazzurri colors, in 190 matches played, with an extraordinary average of 0.83 goals per game. Those were truly different times…
4. Sandro Mazzola (162)
The fourth player with the most appearances in Inter’s history (566) and the fourth all-time top scorer, with 162 goals scored, averaging 0.29 goals per game. Outside the podium in both rankings, but Sandrino will take it with a smile. Mazzola is a part of Inter’s history, a pillar of the legendary team coached by Helenio Herrera who won 2 European trophies (now known as the Champions League). He is the son of Valentino, a symbol of the Grande Torino, who tragically lost his life in the Superga air disaster when Sandro was only seven years old.
3. Roberto Boninsegna (173)
On the podium of all-time top scorers in Inter’s history, we have Roberto Boninsegna, who scored 173 goals in Nerazzurri colors in 283 matches, with an average of 0.61 goals per game. “Bonimba” won a Serie A title in Milan during the 1970/71 season, before clinching two more with Juventus later in his career.
2. Alessandro Altobelli (209)
“Spillo” Altobelli, whose real name is Alessandro, won a Serie A title and two Coppa Italia trophies with Inter, in addition to the 1982 World Cup with the Italian national team. He is in the top 10 for most appearances in Nerazzurri colors (ranked ninth) and is also the second-highest scorer in the club’s history with 209 goals. He wore the Inter jersey 465 times between 1977 and 1988, before transferring to Juventus. His goal-scoring average was 0.45.
